Despite this, large numbers of the infected, including Don, escape the bombardment. Accepting that they have lost total control, Stone orders District One to be firebombed. Doyle, unable to bring himself to comply with the order, abandons his post and escapes with Scarlet, Tammy, Andy and several others through the Greenwich Foot Tunnel. Scarlet, a US Army medical officer, rescues Tammy and Andy while the soldiers in District One are ordered to shoot indiscriminately. The US soldiers initially are ordered to only shoot the infected, but due to it being night and the difficulty of knowing who is infected or not, they are told to shoot anybody.
